Hawaiian shirts have had such a bad rap in the past few years. They became associated with sloppily dressed American tourists, and stylish men everywhere banished flower prints from their wardrobes (or at least stashed them at the back).

Things have changed this summer, however, with the stylish makeover of Hawaiian prints. These are not the usual hibiscus and palm tree motifs in an assemblage of loud colours. No crashing waves or parrots perched on rainforest trees, either.

Call them 'modern Hawaiian' prints, like the oversized and abstracted bird of paradise print that was splattered all over Riccardo Tisci's collection for Givenchy. By blowing up the tropical flowers and layering them on top of one another, he creates the illusion that it is something other than a floral print. This was used on suits, shirts, shorts and jeans. Because these items are already a statement in themselves, it is best to tame them with solid pieces as they did on the runway, where Givenchy's jeans (pictured, HK$12,200) were paired with a simple singlet.
