New chapter for library readers

READERS will have library materials across the whole territory at their disposal with a new library ruling which comes into effect in July.

Starting from July 1, computerised library cards issued by the Urban Council and the Regional Council will be accepted by all public libraries belonging to the two councils.

The Urban Council's Standing Committee will be making the necessary amendments to the Library (Urban Council) By-laws to allow for this significant improvement in library services, and to make other minor amendments to reflect current needs.

Readers will be able to use one council library card to borrow library materials from any of the two councils' libraries.

The other amendments include: Streamlining the level of penalties for offences in Urban Council Public Libraries to achieve an appropriate deterrent effect; Imposing penalties on readers who falsely report the loss of library materials; Permitting readers with physical disabilities to take their wheeled vehicles into library premises; and Enabling borrowers to return borrowed items to any Urban Council library, irrespective of which branch library such items are borrowed from.
