Seagate to double output

Seagate Technology is to double the size of its disk-drive manufacturing operations in Wuxi, in Jiangsu province, with a US$32 million investment.

Last week the Singapore arm of the US-based group said it would take over a building next to its facility in the Wuxi-Singapore Industrial Park that would enable it to double production capacity.

Renovation has begun on the 58,000 square foot building, which should be ready to begin production in June.

Until now Seagate has produced the components in Thailand. The new plant will cut shipping costs and make its Wuxi operations more productive.

Seagate Storage Products senior vice-president Richard Downing said: 'Our Wuxi site has proven to be efficient and productive in its 20 months of operation, which was a key factor in our decision to expand [there].' The move will double Seagate's Wuxi workforce from 1,600 to 3,200 and increase its investment in China to $90 million.
