Club bid to end on a trophy high note
HONGKONG Football Club, whose ambitions of a domestic clean sweep were shattered last week, hope to pick themselves up for the season's last piece of silverware.
Club will defend their Foster's National Sevens title in tomorrow's finals at Hammer Hill Stadium, having already won the league championship and First Division Sevens.
A one-point defeat by Kowloon in last week's Bell's Knockout Cup final ended Club's bid for a clean sweep of trophies.
And skipper Mike Ferrier said the side were determined to finish the season on a high note.
''We were very disappointed last week,'' said Ferrier, who is still recovering from a broken hand. ''We had expected problems in midfield due to injuries, but Kowloon kicked very well.'' Justin Weston, who was last week named Player of the Year, gets his first sevens outing this season.
He joins youngster Jack Avon, making his debut in the Club first team, Steve McCullough, Will Wilde, Ashley Jones, Paul Wellham and Hongkong trio Adam Adair, Philippe Lacamp and Mark Thomas in the nine-man squad.
Club will be without Hongkong sevens international David Bulbeck, who has a slight hamstring problem.
Club face Valley and their second-stringers Dragons in preliminary Pool One, with the top two teams entering the semi-finals.
Kowloon, beaten by Club in the First Division Sevens final in January, face Tigers, Police and Flying Kukris in Pool Two.
Valley will be looking to end a barren two-year spell without a domestic trophy, their team including Stuart Krohn, a member of Hongkong's 10-man sevens squad, and Simon Litster and Ashley Billington, who were in the original 14-strong training squad.
Today's play sees the Second, Third and Fourth Division teams in preliminary-round action.
