Mui puts in appearance at karaoke disc trial

SUPERSTAR Anita Mui Yim-fong was yesterday called to the witness box to tell the High Court how she felt about karaoke discs on which her songs were used.

Called by lawyers for singer Alan Tam Wing-lun, Ms Mui was shown one disc produced by World Records in which film footage of her was used, but she said she gave her permission before it was released.

Tam has testified that he was not asked before defendants Lex Video Production Ltd released a disc and he was unhappy that they used his name and his picture on the cover.

He felt the public would confuse the disc with his own soon-to-be-released disc.

He is seeking an injunction to stop Lex, and its distributors, Universe Laser and Video Company Ltd, passing off their disc as being manufactured by him.

When Ms Mui was shown another disc produced last year by Polygram, Tam's record company and a plaintiff in the case, she said she had been surprised to see her name on the cover, along with others on it.

But Ms Mui did nothing about it as Capital Artists, her recording company, said it would not have much effect as it did not use her original vocals, nor her picture.

Earlier, Polygram's managing director, Mr Donal Chan, told the court it was a mistake that the names had appeared prominently on the cover and later a red banner was put across the front saying they were cover versions.

The hearing before Mr Justice Mayo continues.
