Kennedy buries old teammate

Noel Kennedy emerged victorious from his 'all-Hong Kong' clash with former teammate Mark McMahon to reach the second round of the World Indoor Lawn Bowls Championships in Preston, England.

Kennedy beat the former Hong Kong international in five sets in the first round of the tournament to show that the SAR's profile in world bowls was not affected by McMahon's move to Australia several years ago.

Kowloon Bowling Green Club's Kennedy won 3-7, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 to hand McMahon, a former semi-finalist, one of his earliest defeats in the tournament.

It was also Kennedy's first-win in the tournament in his second appearance. The last one came 10 years ago when he lost in the first round to Scotland's Hugh Duff, who went on to win the title.

McMahon was one of a handful of big-name players to take a tumble at the first hurdle.

Also failing to advance from the opening round were Scotland's three-time indoor world champion Richard Corsie and leading Australian Ian Schuback.
