Breach

Why do the people who want a government broadcasting mouthpiece always suggest stealing channels from RTHK when there are others available? For example, Metro Radio won its licence, in competition, on the promise of an eclectic mix of channels. After two years, it decided this was not viable and turned the more interesting channel over to the usual commercial pap. The Government took no action in what appeared to be a breach of the agreement.

If we need a government radio channel, this is the channel which should be taken back, operated by the Government Information Service and paid for by advertising. If we have any sincerity about democracy in Hong Kong, RTHK should be encouraged to develop its public service role, independent of the objectives of both government and the advertising industry.

RTHK is paid for by the public who can be rightly regarded as its 'owners'.
