Secrets of the inner chamber

DINNER at Hongkong's most publicised house - Brenda and Kai-bong Chau's capacious place on the Peak which straddles Mount Davis Road (staff entrance) and Victoria Place (friends' entrance) - where previous guests have included lifestyles chronicler Robin Leach.

Before the meal - the table for 12 took Kai-bong three hours to set with all the tableware, from the chopsticks to the goblets, inlaid in gold - I was taken on a pilgrimage of the His and Hers shrines - Catholic for her, Buddhist for him.

Brenda's sacred grotto is set into the wall of her ornate bathroom while Kai-bong's temple is in an anteroom off the patio.

Glancing around his sanctuary with its Buddha statues and jade carvings Kai-bong remarks: ''Brenda often comes in here to practise her karaoke. And while she sings, I pray.'' Although I'm sure he didn't mean it in that order!
