Good English essential for HK to stay ahead

Dennis Ho

Communication between different races is impossible without a common language.

English is the official language in many countries and is widely used.

Hong Kong is a place where East meets West and a city that plays an important role on the international stage.

It definitely needs English as a tool to help it recover and reach new heights after the Asian financial turmoil.

With its favourable geographical location, Hong Kong is the gateway to mainland China, and the business centre of Southeast and East Asia.

In addition, with the large number of foreign companies, and tourists, Hong Kong is also a centre of business, finance and tourism. A knowledge of English is needed.

Asian cities such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur have a high standard of English. These economic competitors of Hong Kong have put great effort into popularising English.

These cosmopolitan cities, together with Hong Kong, attract a large number of foreign workers. English is necessary for the ex change of ideas and as a tool to allow people to work in harmony. Without a high standard of English, cities cannot hold or take part in international events effectively.

A high standard of English is therefore the key to maintaining Hong Kong's competitive edge as a metropolis in the future.

The best opportunities are always available to people who are bilingual.

Hong Kong demands high levels of English proficiency.

Recently, the Government bid to host the 15th Asian Games in 2006 to promote Hong Kong. The Asian Games committee will not even consider Hong Kong's proposal if we have problems communicating with foreigners! English opens up infinite channels of communication, and is vital to keeping Hong Kong's reputation as one of the most renowned cities in the new century.
