Government explains office move decision

Updated at 1pm: The Government has rejected suggestions that plans to move its offices to Admiralty were abandoned because high profits could be made if the land was instead sold commercially.

''The Government is not trying to gain revenue by selling land,'' Planning and Lands Bureau Deputy Secretary Patrick Lau Lai-chiu said on Thursday.

He told local radio the Government was considering proposals to move its offices to another location after realising the lack of commercial office space in the Tamar site.

''There are many locations in our minds - including the Kai Tak airport site,'' Mr Lau explained.

''The plans are just undergoing a review process. Nothing is solid,'' a Planning and Lands Bureau spokeswoman told SCMP.com.
