A user's guide to fashion

Feet first Pumps Couture Footwear (Room 303, Winning House, 10-16 Cochrane Street, Central - you can see the shop from the escalator) is a must for any shoe fetishist. It stocks more than 20 top designer brands (below and right) including Manolo Blahnik, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Jil Sander, J.P. Tods and Jimmy Choo at up to 60 per cent off the retail price - and that's this season's selection. There are also one-off, runway samples that never made it into production and choice pairs from past collections. One local stylist stumbled on Christian Louboutin's sell-out jean boots (below) that originally cost $4,800 but were marked down to $1,855. The shop's secret? It sources directly from Italy where owner Caribbean Wong has connections with manufacturers and model agencies (sizes are 38 and above, however). But hurry: the shop won't stay a secret now local artists like Faye Wong scour its shelves.

Pin up Part punk safety pin, part bourgeois brooch, this piece from Christian Dior is so perverse you've got to love it. Worn with a T-shirt, black polo neck and killer kilt, it is the best investment you'll make this week. From Christian Dior boutiques ($1,900).

Back to basics Are you crazy for this season's cool little clutches but tend to be like Mary Poppins when it comes to packing? Save space with Urban Decay's One Stick Wonder. This portable pigment stick works on the eyes, cheeks, lips - anywhere you want a bit of colour. For a limited period, the street-smart makeup brand is offering a special intoductory set with two different shades (choose from Hotpants and Geisha, or Boom and Rebel) for $265. If you require severe style cutbacks, there is also hope in sight. From January 31 to February 4, stop by Urban Decay shops (Festival Walk, Kowloon Tong, and Windsor House, Causeway Bay) for serious editing by professional makeup artists offering free makeovers. Hairstylists from Orient 4 and image consultant Ingrid Kwan of House of the Rising Stars will also be on hand to help you with your new look. It's all one-on-one, so call Carline Ki & Associates at 2522-8976 for an appointment. Fast.
