Elderly couples have hit out at being moved into public flats half the size of those allocated to young couples.

They say the system does not take their individual needs into account.

Couples aged over 60 are in some cases being offered only a 182-square-foot unit, while younger couples are given a 366-square-foot flat because the Housing Department presumes they may have children.

Yau Ma-lam, 73, and Lai Tai-mui, 63, who live in Sau Mau Ping Estate, Kwun Tong, said they were being forced to move into a smaller flat next month as the block they are living in was being demolished.

'I have spoken to the officials many times, telling them that my 38-year-old son is coming from the mainland very soon,' Mr Yau said.

'The new flat is already very small for the two of us. How can my family live here when my son arrives?'

Another couple in the same estate, who have already moved into one of the new, smaller units, said there was hardly any space for them to move around.
