Stargazers in a jam after meteor show

Hundreds of stargazers turned out early yesterday to see dozens of meteors shoot across the night sky in a climax to the Leonid meteor shower.

Police said there were traffic jams in Sai Kung and Tseung Kwan O and long queues at bus stops afterwards.

The meteors made for a spectacular light show which peaked between 1am and 2am.

Hong Kong Space Observers' president Chan Ming-fai said it was rare to see hundreds of shooting stars appearing in the sky within the space of an hour. The next Leonid meteor shower will be in 30 years' time.

More than 1,000 stargazers gathered at Shuen Wan near Pat Sin Leng to watch the meteors, and police received reports of traffic jams in Sai Kung and Tseung Kwan O at 3am.

The Transport Department said about 700 people were still waiting at Sai Kung bus stops at 3.30am.
