Lions face miserable long-term future

I refer to the picture which appeared in the South China Morning Post, on March 21, with the caption, 'Diplomat cats'.

It showed lion couple Zhuangzhuang and Kaini relaxing at the Badaling Safari Park outside Beijing.

The lions have been offered to Kabul Zoo to replace Marjan, 'Afghanistan's legendary big cat who died in January amid a worldwide outpouring of sympathy'.

To animal lovers like me death was a blessing for Marjan.

The lion had suffered horrible injuries after a grenade was thrown into his cage. He lost an eye.

Clearly, even now, Kabul is not a suitable environment for any animal.

Transporting two healthy lions from China to Afghanistan is like sending them right from an animal haven into a living hell.

Do they deserve to have to endure such a long and miserable life in Kabul?
