Typhoon races towards Hong Kong

Elaine Wu

Typhoon Dujuan, the South China Sea's strongest storm of the year, is expected to pass close to Hong Kong tonight.

The Observatory raised the No1 standby signal at 11pm last night, warning that the storm was 'moving fast' towards Hong Kong. The weather is expected to deteriorate rapidly today with the No3 signal likely to be raised.

Typhoon Dujuan was moving west or west-northwest at about 28km/h last night and was about 750km from Hong Kong when the No1 signal was raised.

Dujuan developed in the western Pacific Ocean with wind speeds at its centre of about 170km/h, faster than any other typhoon this year.

Due to the approach of the typhoon, the Hong Kong Space Museum has postponed the viewing of Mars through its telescopes, which had been scheduled for tomorrow night, to Wednesday next week.

The viewing will be held at 7.30pm, at the podium of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, subject to weather conditions. There is a maximum capacity of 1,000 people. Free admission coupons will be distributed from 6pm.
