Wall of defence

Paramilitary police reactions are put to the test in an anti-terrorist exercise dubbed 'Great Wall 2003' at the People's Armed Police training camp in Beijing. Presiding over Friday's drill in his capacity as vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, President Hu Jintao addressed the troops and stressed that the mainland faced a 'real threat' from terrorist activities. The drill was the latest in a series of anti-terrorist exercises staged on the mainland in the past few months. Similar drills have been conducted in Shandong, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangdong and Xinjiang.
