Conviction for $7 theft from telephone box

An unemployed 67-year-old man was convicted yesterday for stealing $7 in coins from a Shau Kei Wan telephone box using a length of bamboo and sticky tape. Hung Ka-lun, who receives $2,400 a month in welfare payments, pleaded guilty in Eastern Court to one count of theft. Magistrate Ian Candy placed Hung on a $500 self-recognisance good behaviour bond for 12 months.

man dies in fall from flat while fleeing police

A Vietnamese man fell to his death in Yau Ma Tei while trying to escape police officers who arrived at this flat to conduct a search. A police spokesman said officers with a search warrant investigating a burglary case knocked on the door of the flat at the Man Wah Building in Man Ying Street. 'Our colleagues said the man answered the door but tried to flee as soon as he learnt it was police officers outside.' The 34-year-old climbed out of the window but lost his footing and fell onto a first-floor platform. He was certified dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

electoral regulator reprimands newspaper

The Hong Kong Commercial Daily was censured by the Electoral Affairs Commission for breaching its guidelines in a biased report on a candidate in the Shun Tin constituency in Kwun Tong ahead of last November's district council elections. The newspaper was found to have breached the 'no fair advantage' rule because the article featured one candidate criticising another who was contesting the same constituency. The commission said the newspaper did not approach the latter for a response.

Boys nabbed for robbery

Police arrested three boys, aged 14 and 15, for allegedly snatching a bag containing $2,000 from a woman in a Kwai Chung park. Officers were called to the park in Shing Fong Square about 1.30am. They arrested the trio at nearby Kwai Shing Estate and recovered the bag and money.
