woman dies after swallowing pain-killers

A woman died after swallowing a packet of pain-killers in an apparent suicide at a village house in Tai Po. Lee Ka-ming, 30, was found by her boyfriend, 39, unconscious in bed in the house in Tai Wo Service Road West just after noon. She was declared dead at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. Her boyfriend told police the couple had a heated argument over their relationship on Thursday night.

red tides attributed to build up of algae

Two red tides were spotted in Hong Kong waters this week but both have dissipated. Marine police saw the first red tide at North Ninepin Island on Wednesday. Government scientists said it was caused by algae rarely found in Hong Kong and could cause itching and burning sensations. The second red tide was at Deep Bay on Thursday, and scientists blamed a common, harmless algae.

teenager back from brink after high-rise standoff

Firemen talked down a 15-year-old boy who threatened to jump from the roof of a 19-storey building in Aberdeen after a 90-minute standoff. Fire and police officers were called to Yen Shing Mansion in Shek Pai Wan Road just before 8am when the student was found sitting on the top of an air-conditioner outside a 19th-floor unit. He was unhappy because he had had a row with his mother.
