Upmarket Cantonese restaurant Zi Xing Xuan had its grand opening at 2/F, 33 Sharp Street East, Causeway Bay (tel: 3162 8899). The 11,000-square-foot space includes four private dining rooms, which can be opened to create one big room that accommodates up to 60 guests. The kitchen uses no added monosodium glutamate. Dishes include deep-fried scallop and banana with salted egg yolk ($88), stewed beef brisket with turnip in bouillon, sauted spare ribs with strawberries in sweet-and-sour sauce ($88), deep-fried golden prawns ($168), grilled Japanese Kobe beef ($280) and chilled aloe pudding ($23). The dim sum menu has some interesting items: rice-flour rolls made with red rice ($23-$32), deep-fried chicken wings with goose liver ($38), baked egg tart with hasima (snow frog fat, $23) and sliced eel with spicy sauce ($48).
