Filmart is a three-day get-together for Hong Kong filmmakers, distributors and actors from all over the world.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council says it will 'promote Hong Kong as a regional hub for distribution and production of film, TV programmes and entertainment-related products in Asia Pacific'.

Entertainment ambassador Tony Leung Chiu-wai took centre stage at yesterday's opening of the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market.

The acclaimed actor said he hoped to promote Hong Kong movies to the world.

'I am not a professional salesman. I am a professional actor. I will introduce Hong Kong movies to the world ... [by showing] how we can be creative and efficient when producing these films.'

When asked why he has yet to start working in Hollywood, Leung said: 'It's not that I am not going to Hollywood, I am not really concerned with location.

'The only thing I am concerned with is a good script and a good director. I don't care where it happens.'

The star, who won the best actor award at Cannes for his role in Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love said he has never planned where his acting career will take him.

'I never planned where to establish my acting career, whether in Hollywood or another country. I have received scripts from many different countries besides Hollywood, but I just have not found one that I am interested in yet.'

Hollywood and the rest of the world is set to see a lot more of Leung this year as he plans to tour the world to promote the newly released 2046 worldwide.

The Filmart is still in its teething stages, with some industry figures questioning its timing.

'It is a great event to catch up with old friends but the timing is not good, it is just one month after Cannes Film Festival, so it becomes a missed opportunity.' said Jeffrey Chan, head of distribution for MediaAsia.

Next year, Filmart will be held in March to coincide with the Hong Kong Film Awards to boost interest, Trade Development Council executive director Fred Lam Tin-fuk said at the opening ceremony.
