Canada may seem on the peripheral when it comes to getting media attention on this side of the world - but with its progressive stance on issues like gay marriage, war, and legalising marijuana, it is fast setting itself apart from other countries (especially its neighbour to the south). Federal elections are being held in Canada today and it seems the Liberals and the Conservatives are neck and neck. The Toronto-based Globe and Mail newspaper says it could be the closest race since 1972, when former Liberal prime minister Pierre Trudeau beat then Conservative leader Robert Stanfield 109 to 107 electoral districts. The Canadian elections are not likely to be broadcast on local television, but the Canadian consulate-general is arranging television coverage through a satellite link to the nation's capital, Ottawa, from 7am to 11am.
