Girl, 9, was raped 13 times by her tutor's husband, court hears

A nine-year-old girl was raped 13 times over the course of eight months by the husband of her English tutor, a Court of First Instance jury heard yesterday.

Prosecutor Alice Chan told the jury that the decoration worker, 39, attacked his young victim two to three times on six different days between January and August 18 of last year.

She said the six incidents happened at the defendant's Tsz Wan Shan home or at the home of his parents, also at Tsz Wan Shan.

The defendant has pleaded not guilty to 13 counts of rape.

The victim, who is now aged 10, cannot be identified.

Ms Chan told the court the girl had known her abuser from when she was 'very small', as they used to go to the same church. The girl usually called him 'Uncle Koon'.

The court heard the accused's wife began giving the girl private English tutorial lessons at their home from the start of the summer holidays in 2002.

Ms Chan said he often took the girl out regularly by himself and first raped her after Lunar New Year last year.

'The accused told [the girl] that he had to collect something at his mother's home and took her there. There he removed all her clothing and had sexual intercourse.' He raped her again before dressing her and taking her home, she said.

The court was told the second round of attacks occurred when he called her and invited her over to his home.

Ms Chan said after the third incident, which occurred in the man's home, the accused taught the girl how to cook noodles.

Ms Chan said the last rape occurred on August 18, last year when the accused invited his victim to go to his parents' home to feed the goldfish.

After he twice assaulted the girl, [he] received a phone call from his wife, who learned the young girl was with her husband.

'The next day, [the girl], upon questioning by [the wife] admitted that she had been having sexual contact with the accused,' Ms Chan said.

'In fact, the matter unfolded when [the tutor] and her husband went to see a social worker on August 20, 2003 ... [and] during the interview, the accused told [the social worker] he had sexual intercourse with a girl on August 18.'

The matter was finally reported on August 21, 2003, when the accused surrendered to police.

The trial, before Deputy High Court Judge Alan Wright, continues in the Court of First Instance.
