Man charged over car bombing of businessman
A man accused of building a car bomb that killed a businessman in Tin Shui Wai last week appeared in court yesterday.
Lam Sing-kwong, 52, entered no plea in Fanling Court to one charge of making an explosive substance.
The case was adjourned until Thursday for further investigations. Lam was remanded in custody.
The court heard that between November 29, 2000, and August 4, 2004, Lam 'unlawfully and maliciously' made the explosive substance 'with intent by means to endanger life or cause serious injury to property'.
The device comprised three pieces of mobile phone components with electronic circuits, one lithium battery connected with a piece of electric wire, one piece of plastic alarm clock component with an electronic circuit and two pieces of plastic alarm clock components.
The victim, Liu Kwok-shun, 47, was slowing for a traffic light on Long Tin Road about 8.30am on Wednesday when a bomb went off under his seat.
Liu's wife, Wong Lai-kiu, 42, who was sitting beside him, suffered severe injuries to her face, right arm, leg and body.
The blast ripped a hole in the floor of the car under the driver's seat and caused Liu's Mazda sedan to career out of control before ramming the rear of another vehicle.
Police said the force of the explosion caused the car roof to bulge out, forced open the two front doors and smashed all the windows and windscreen. It also left a shallow crater in the road.
Ms Wong remained in serious condition last night.
