Couch potatoes: your casting call at last

Flora Wu

Starting today, all Cable TV viewers with mobile phones have the chance to experience Asia's first 24-hour interactive television.

The new service will get a trial run on Channel 5 (the traffic channel) daily between 8pm and 6am, and its 24-hour official launch is scheduled for December 1. Anyone can vote, chat or send comments to the channel via mobile phone for free (at least for a few weeks) by sending text messages to 6450 5050.

Robert Chua Wah-peng, chairman and founder of The Interactive Channel (TIC) Company, said: 'Television has long been criticised as being a passive medium. With TIC, the viewers will become an active participant.'

Parents of young children will be happy to know that TIC's programming policy will also be 'no sex' and 'no violence'. TIC is also promoting a 'Letters from Santa Campaign' where parents can order Santa greetings for their children online. Visit www.santagreeting.com.
