CUHK was established in 1963, with its Graduate School founded in 1966. The university's official teaching medium is English and Cantonese, unlike other Hong Kong universities. By September this year, CUHK had more than 15,000 students, including more than 5,800 postgraduates. The Graduate School offers a wide range of research and taught postgraduate degrees up to doctoral level. Large programmes include its MBA and teacher-training courses, with taught master's available in professional areas and less work-specific subjects. New programmes this year include philosophy and history.

CUHK's School of Continuing Studies (SCS) opens up education options for the general community. It was established in 1965 and now caters for about 38,000 students. SCS provides postgraduate courses in partnership with universities outside Hong Kong leading to overseas awards, executive and professional short courses and other courses. About 300 students are studying postgraduate programmes with SCS.

CHU HAI COLLEGE

Chu Hai moved from Guangzhou to Hong Kong in 1949 and became registered to offer post-secondary education in Hong Kong. It is also a registered private university under the Education Ministry in Taipei. The private college comprises faculties of arts, commerce and science, and engineering, and offers four-year degrees and master's and doctoral level degrees in Chinese history and Chinese literature.

CityU was initially established as a polytechnic in 1984. It became a university in 1994, with its School of Graduate Studies established in the same year. HONG KONG BAPTIST UNIVERSITY (HKBU)

HKBU was established in 1956 as Hong Kong Baptist College. It became Hong Kong's third institution working wholly at degree level in 1989 and gained university status in 1994. The total number of students is about 6,800 with 1,814 on taught postgraduate programmes and 284 research students. The Graduate School, founded in 2002, provides co-ordination and promotion for its postgraduate education, with programmes covering cultural areas, communications and Chinese medicine among those offered. On the business side, two new programmes are available for 2005: MSc in applied accounting and finance and MSc in corporate governance and directorship.

HKBU's School of Continuing Education started in 1975 and by this year had grown to 50,000 students. HONG KONG INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION (HKIEd)

HKIEd is Hong Kong's leading teacher education institution, providing undergraduate degrees, postgraduate teaching diplomas and supporting the teaching profession in career development programmes. It was established in 1994 by amalgamating the Institute of Language in Education and Hong Kong's four education colleges and has a total student number of about 7,660. Postgraduate diploma in education (PGDE) courses cover primary and secondary levels with full-time/part-time programmes available. Successful completion means participants can gain qualified teacher status recognised by the Education and Manpower Bureau. There are more than 580 students now on PGDE programmes. The institute is expanding postgraduate provision for teachers, offering two new programmes in English studies and Chinese studies providing subject knowledge preparation for language teachers and access to master's courses from two overseas institutions. The institute aims to introduce its own Master of Education in 2005-2006.

PolyU started as Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1972 and became a full university in 1994. It now has a student body of almost 25,000, making it Hong Kong's largest University Grants Committee-supported institution. PolyU's taught postgraduate programmes number more than 50, covering areas from fashion to interpreting, with a new doctoral degree in health science offered this year. Applied research is emphasised. Its continuing and professional education arm (SPEED), China Business Centre and its online institute Hong Kong CyberU serve additional students.

HONG KONG SHUE YAN COLLEGE

Liberal arts Hong Kong Shue Yan College was privately established in 1971 to expand post-secondary learning opportunities at a time when higher education places in Hong Kong were severely limited. In recent years it has been moving from diploma to degree courses and aims to become a university in 2006. It does not have plans for postgraduate courses leading to Shue Yan awards, but since 1979 has been offering several postgraduate programmes run in partnership with overseas and mainland institutions. Shue Yan was also an early pioneer of postgraduate programme links with the mainland, collaborating with Beijing University in 1991 to offer part-time master's programmes to assist career development for Shue Yan graduates and others. Shue Yan now has a student enrolment of 3,048, including 242 on postgraduate courses and is a long-standing member of the Association of Southeast Asian Institutes of Higher Learning.

HKUST was launched in 1991, becoming Hong Kong's third university. It offered postgraduate programmes from the outset and its four schools now have 2,820 postgraduates on all modes of study out of total student numbers of 8,380. A multidisciplinary approach is encouraged for research programmes, which focus on uncovering new knowledge to address local, regional and global needs. Subject areas include atmospheric environmental science, marine environmental science and bioengineering. Taught master's programmes, particularly self-funded ones, often focus on more work-related concerns. Its popular MBA and range of engineering programmes are expanding.

Lingnan, established as Lingnan College in 1967, gained degree-awarding status in 1992 and was officially incorporated as a university in 1999. It has about 2,200 studying at undergraduate level, three faculties in Arts, Business and Social Science and offers a small number of research and self-financed taught postgraduate programmes. The latter are in line with its liberal arts orientation focusing on the cultural side of life and the humanities, as well as more career-oriented courses. OPEN UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG (OUHK)

OUHK was founded by the Hong Kong government in 1989, when it was known as the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong. It became self-financing in 1993-1994 and gained university status in 1997. OUHK provides continuing and higher education through open and distance learning programmes. It has an expanding portfolio of postgraduate courses, which this year includes a new doctorate in business administration. The total number of students is 22,000, with 18 per cent studying at postgraduate level. Large programmes include IT, arts and social sciences with business and education among growing areas.

HKU's School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE), previously the Department of Extra-Mural Studies, launched its first courses in 1956-1957 with 330 enrolments. In 2003-2004, it had more than 105,000 enrolments, with more than 6,600 at postgraduate level. Business, law and IT courses are especially popular. SPACE has had a longstanding working arrangement with the University of London and serves as a direct registration centre for those wanting to apply for a University of London external degree.
