Mr Hong Kong reveals the secret of success
'Everything that I do, I work hard for, therefore I have a lot of confidence,' Matthew Ko Kwan-yin, TVB's first Mr Hong Kong, tells CitySeen in explaining why he deserves the title. 'There's a fine line between confidence and cockiness and if I don't pretend to be something I'm not, then I don't come across as the latter,' says the 21-year-old model.
A denizen of Toronto, Ko studied at York University and was crowned Mr Sunshine Boy at a similar competition held by the local Chinese-language station, Fairchild. After completing his one-year contract with them, he learned about this competition and was determined to win.
'When I want something bad enough and I put my mind to it, I usually get what I want,' says Ko. 'For instance, I really wanted a sports car, so I taught piano and saved up. With some dedication, I bought a brand new Honda Prelude. My family was really proud of me.'
Confidence aside, Ko tells CitySeen it may have been his musical talent that won the 600 female judges over. He writes his own music, but for the talent portion of the show he played Chopin's Nocturne and had the ladies squealing with delight. He tells CitySeen that although he is not in a relationship, he is not commitment phobic if he meets the right girl. And when we asked if he had any tips for shy guys to get what they want, his advice was to 'be yourself and not to be preoccupied about what other people think'.
