Big Night out

I hate Friday nights. The only thing worse in Hong Kong is a Saturday night. If Thursdays are the new Fridays, then I like to stick firmly to Wednesday nights and play it safe.

On this particular Wednesday, I met my girlfriend, Dawn, at the Cat Cafe on Kingston Street in Causeway Bay. If you love cats, this is the place for you - they're everywhere. Lounging on the sofas, mingling with the clientele, the felines are the stars of the joint. We had a very affable tabby sit with us throughout our meal.

By the time we left, all the neon lights had come out to play in Causeway Bay and we wandered the streets, stopping in shops - until we reached the Sake Bar on Sharp Street East behind Times Square. It's a dimly lit oasis with some great sake.

After suitably chilling out, we were in the mood for something more in your face, so we headed to the Wanch on Jaffe Road. We'd heard good things about the open mic night there, although nothing prepared us for what we saw. It was jam-packed when we arrived. The reason was four beautiful girls dressed in cowboy outfits playing the best country and western I'd ever heard. The whole crowd, from old rockers to young punks, were getting into it.

They were called the Shotgun She-Ras and I'll definitely be looking out for them again. Buoyed by that adrenalin rush, we hit Jewel in Central. DJ Janva is a local DMC champ and he plays there every week. On Wednesdays he's in house mode and had the models thinking more about the music than their free champagne.

We left for home with great memories of cat-filled cafes, sultry sake joints, bizarre yet inspiring country music and sharing drinks with models to tub-thumping house. Wednesdays are truly the new weekend (just don't tell anyone).
