Dan used to spend Christmas Day visiting street sleepers and distributing donations to the poor with his church in Cameroon.

But now he wakes up under a flyover in Yau Ma Tei, homeless and destitute.

He arrived in Hong Kong almost three years ago after fleeing Cameroon because of what he claims was political persecution.

Since then he has faced more than a year of detention, the threat of removal, and homelessness.

Dan - not his real name - came to Hong Kong in January 2003 after officials in Paris refused to let him land there. He filed a claim for asylum with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the Director of Immigration, who is bound to investigate because of the city's obligations under the Convention Against Torture.

But while his application is pending, he cannot work and receives no financial support from the government, forcing him to sleep at the Star Ferry pier in Tsim Sha Tsui or under a bridge in Yau Ma Tei.
