Million-dollar boost for Hong Kong sports

National Sports Associations (NSAs) were presented with a total of $1,070,640 during the opening of the Festival of Sport at Wan Chai Sports Ground on Sunday. The awards were in recognition of the athletes' outstanding performances in multi-sports games and championships last year.

NSAs are the driving force behind the festival, organising competitions and exhibitions around Hong Kong from now until the end of June.

The festival is organised by the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and sponsored by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD).

Macau rock duo Soler, singer Charles Szeto and other celebrities performed in an Olympic-style opening ceremony, which also included a lion and dragon dance and a karate demonstration.

The entertainers, including Tang Ho-kwong, Matthew Ko, Fan Chun-fung, Li Yanan Leanne, Winnie Shum, Cindy Lee and Angelina Wong, also competed against elite athletes on the track.

Festival programme booklets are available at the 18 LCSD district offices or can be downloaded from www.hkolympic.org.
