Gigi proves a class act

Actor and singer Gigi Leung Wing-kei knows what a boost a little support can be for an up-and-comer.

Earlier this week, Leung, who was named ambassador of this year's Outstanding Students' Selection by Yuen Long Junior Chamber, said she was influenced by a scholarship she received at secondary school.

'I was thrilled,' Leung said. 'The encouragement and recognition is something I will never forget.'

Leung (right at this week's press conference) returned the favour by establishing an art scholarship at her alma mater, the Maryknoll Convent School in Kowloon Tong.

'The recipients of the first scholarship drew me a thank you card. I was really moved,' the 30-year-old said.

The Outstanding Students' Selection, which started in 1999, awards Hong Kong's best and brightest with educational prizes, such as international students exchange programmes.
