Scholarship boost for teen inventor
Teen inventor Chan Yik-hei has received a boost to his academic career with a full scholarship from Standard Chartered.
Yik-hei, 16, who last month was offered a place at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, will have his fees, accommodation and administrative costs paid for his four-year degree, to the tune of $250,000.
Yik-hei said. 'I thought it would only be about $15,000 to cover the initial deposit, so I was surprised when I found out how much it was. I had been a bit worried about paying my fees, so this is a big relief.'
A bank spokeswoman said the award was part of the Priority Academy Honorable Scholar scheme.
'Chan Yik-hei is making a difference so we feel he is well-qualified for this award,' she said.
Yik-hei was keen to work with the bank to help partially sighted people as part of Standard Chartered's Seeing is Believing campaign, she added.
Yik-hei rose to fame in 2004 when his security-conscious robot Total Equip came second in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the best result for a Hong Kong student.
He has since been given the right to have a minor planet named after him.
