Art to challenge

Art lovers, get your calendars ready: the New Vision Arts Festival, organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will run from October 20 to November 19.

The arts extravanganza provides a platform for artists to challenge their own boundaries by experimenting with other disciplines.

It will showcase a selection of cutting-edge performances for an east-meets-west cultural experience.

Opening the festival will be The Rite of Spring and Near the Terrace by Shen Wei Dance Arts (USA). The company is led by Shen Wei, a sought-after Chinese choreographer and painter in the United States.

His company is renowned for fusing dance and visual arts in a poetic manner.

Another highlight is insen, an audiovisual collaboration by legendary Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto and German experimentalist Alva Noto.

Sakamoto gained international fame by composing movie scores for The Last Emperor and Little Buddha.

On the local front, Class 7A Drama Group and Shu Ning Presentation Unit will join forces to present i.Cherry. Starring comedian Cheung Tat-ming, the play will revisit Chekhov's classic The Cherry Orchard, giving it a contemporary twist.

Composer Peter Kam, winner of the Berlin Film Festival Silver Bear, will create the score.

Theatre Ensemble will devise a contemporary version of Goethe's Faust. Titled Faust auf dem Klosett - Epic Toilet Opera, the play will mirror the story of the classic character while parodying the world as a toilet.

The offbeat play will feature actors Jim Chim and Olivia Yan, as well as dancers Abby Chan and Daniel Yeung,

The closing performance, Geisha, which was conceived and directed by Singaporean director Ong Keng Sen, will take a magical look into the mysterious world of the Japanese geisha.

New York-based actress Karen Kandel will interpret a range of roles, weaving together stories about different aspects of a geisha's life.

Joining her will be Kabuki performer Masanosuke Gojo. The performance will feature traditional Japanese music along with contemporary computer soundscapes.

The festival also offers exhibitions, workshops, lectures and meet-the-artist sessions. Tickets will be available at Urbtix outlets from September 2 onwards. For more details, visit www.newvisionfestival.gov.hk
