Doctors urge probe of closure

A group of senior doctors has urged the police to investigate the sudden closure of Medical Alliance Networks owing wages and consultation fees in some cases as high as HK$80,000. MAN had sent letters to its affiliated doctors saying that it would transfer all the patients to the new organisation but not the debts.

Caution on dole time limit

The secretary of the soon-to-be-disbanded Poverty Commission said it did not agree with a proposal to set a time limit on people receiving welfare. Stephen Fisher, who will become the director of the Social Welfare Department next month, said a time limit on Comprehensive Social Security Assistance was likely to have a detrimental impact on recipients. He said the idea would have to be carefully studied and the public consulted widely before it was implemented.

Improve practices, Cable TV urged

A group of district councillors has urged Cable TV to improve its sales methods and procedures for terminating subscriptions. They claimed salesmen often misled subscribers, who ended up paying more than expected, and said termination procedures were complicated. The councillors yesterday accompanied seven subscribers to Cable TV headquarters in Tsuen Wan where they were received by company staff, given a refund and had their subscriptions stopped.
