Snow dudes squeeze every dollar out of winemaking

If you like to take home hotel shampoos and soaps, the next time you stay at the Peninsula there'll be some new bottles to add to your collection. Recently, they switched to a new brand called Davi, created by two young Californians, Josh LeVine and Carlo Mondavi. If that last name rings a bell, it's because the latter is heir to the Mondavi wine fortune. He met his business partner LeVine when the two were - whoa! - professional snowboarders.

Last week they were here to tell the media about Josh and Carlo's most excellent adventure - or how two snow-and-surf dudes started making natural skincare from leftover ingredients at grandpa's winery.

'It came about from the winemaking process,' Mondavi recalled. 'After fermenting, the grape seeds, skins and pumice are left in the tank and my job was to shovel it all out. I was thinking the feel and the smell of this stuff was incredible. Then my grandfather told me this by-product was sold to pharmaceutical companies because it has a high amount of antioxidants, and it just went from there.'

The Davi label was born three years ago when the two quit snowboarding. Now it's used at the Penn and on sale at Lane Crawford, while the boys get to travel and check out places like Hong Kong. Awesome! 'We're having the best time ever. My friends here really showed us around. We even went on a hike to Dragon's Back,' Mondavi (left) said.
