Cloth bag spreads the green message

Many people recently bought the 'I'm not a plastic bag' cloth bag by Anya Hindmarch. But most of them bought it for fashion reasons, not to protect the environment. They blindly followed the trend.

Hongkongers buy luxurious bags no matter how expensive they are. They only care about owning the right things, not about the price or the reason. People buy things they don't need.

People only bought the Anya Hindmarch to keep up with the trends.

We can't spend our money just because something is fashionable.

We should look after our money - we have to work hard to earn it.

Thanks for your letter, Ting-ting. I've got a terrible confession to make: when Anya Hindmarch's bags came out a few months ago, I too wanted one. Perhaps it was the buzz and the attention it was getting in the media, but I did hanker after one. I didn't go as far as chasing around the shops looking for one, but I do recall admiring a friend's one.

The 'I'm not a plastic bag' cloth bag was an incredible fashion phenomenon. For a while they were the most coveted bag in the city. Does this mean that those who were caught up in the trend are shallow fashion victims? I'd have to say yes. But Hindmarch did achieve something: she succeeded in making an otherwise boring bag cool. Now the idea of carrying a reusable bag is funky and people are more aware about not wasting plastic.
