Test your metal

Jin Peh

There are three main groups of metal-related enterprises. The first group consists of those directly related to products made from metal such as vehicles, machinery, tools, utensils and equipment.

Metal is associated with power and justice, which explains why security and law firms are considered metal-type companies. Because of metal coins, banks, finance and accounting companies compose the final group.

In the cycle of birth, metal is derived from earth. Hence, besides colours associated with metal (white, grey and silver), earth colours (yellow, beige and brown) can be used in the logos of metal-related companies. Shapes that can be used include circles and ovals, which represent metal, and squares, which symbolise earth.

Metal is destroyed by fire, so it is not advisable to use triangles or colours associated with fire. Metal melts to form 'water', thereby draining its essence. Thus, the colours and shapes associated with water are not recommended in the logos of metal-type companies. Metal cuts down wood so the use of green and rectangles should be avoided too.

With these principles in mind, you can understand why grey or silver are the colours of choice for the logos of many banks and finance firms.
