The Brick Show 2007

Cattle Depot Artists Village

Ends Dec 30

Many dismiss Lego as just toys for children, but for building blocks aficionados such as Joey Kwok Yue-him these colourful plastic pieces are versatile creative tools. And The Brick Show 2007, which is running at the Cattle Depot Artists Village, demonstrates just what and how much you can do with them.

Organised by the Hong Kong Lego Users Group, the exhibition showcases works by more than 20 of its members, aged from 18 to over 40.

'We first had the idea of a show a year ago but we didn't start building the models until early this year,' says event co-ordinator Kwok.

'We are all Lego fans. Some of us have played them for 25 to 30 years while others stopped then picked them up again ... and they got even more enthusiastic the second time round.

'We never quite grow out of it ... when we were kids, we built things from its instructions books. Now we just build whatever tickles our fancy.

'Some of us are also into collecting the figures. Some [of which] are available for just one year before production stops.'

The Brick Show 2007 is made up of three featured areas: The Brick Town, The Minifigs' Wars and The Design Corner.

The Brick Town is made up of 100,000 pieces of building blocks and is a 'dream town' comprising buildings with 'excellent transportation facilities'. The Minifigs' War details battles from past, present and the future (as in Star Wars).

'Lego doesn't feature any weapons because the company doesn't want to promote violence, so we have to think of a way to represent the fighting,' says Kwok.

The Design Corner features more than 50 models that show not only what you can create with the pieces, but techniques that enhance their versatility.
