Vivienne Tam over the moon as childhood dream comes true

Disneyland visitors on Monday got to see a few extra attractions on Main Street. The theme park was hosting a Lunar New Year media event all afternoon with various local stars appearing for promotions, performances and activities. To the many mainland tourists, it was a bonus and a nice surprise. 'Do they do this every day?' one guest asked.

Obviously, the house of the mouse is looking to impress in the coming year of the rat. Singer Justin Lo and DJ Sammy Leung Chi-kin showed up to unveil Mickey statues in the park. The Twins (Charlene Choi Cheuk-yin and Gillian Chung Yan-tung) arrived late in the afternoon to kick off the Mickey's Rockin' the Mouse Castle stage show. Earlier, the entire street was turned into a catwalk for a Vivienne Tam fashion show. In an unholy alliance of the stylish and the tacky, Tam (pictured) has designed new Lunar New Year costumes for Mickey and Minnie, along with 12 Mickey-inspired ready-to-wear dresses available at her shops starting in March.

'I adore Mickey Mouse because I grew up with him,' Tam gushed. 'Now I get to dress them in my own way, which is like a childhood dream come true. Red is a Chinese colour and it represents spring so it's my theme colour. My designs are a combination of east meets west, a harmonised blending of different cultural elements. It's also good practice to design for cartoon characters as they are really fascinating but not real. I got very excited when I measured Mickey and Minnie's shapes as I was coming up with the design concept.'
