White Rabbit back
The maker of White Rabbit confectionery has resumed production using milk certified as being untainted with melamine, but a domestic sales ban remains in effect pending further tests, the company said yesterday.
State-owned Shanghai Guan Sheng Yuan Food halted domestic sales late last month after other countries found melamine in the sweets, but the company has neither admitted contamination nor issued a formal recall of the product.
The sweets using untainted milk would undergo testing before domestic sales and exports resumed, China Daily reported.
'We are still producing more candy, which will be for sale later,' a spokeswoman said. 'The test report [on the earlier sweets] still hasn't come out. I don't know why it is taking so long.'
Singapore announced White Rabbit contained melamine more than two weeks ago, followed by Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.
Guan Sheng Yuan is owned by Bright Foods Group, which produces milk and other food products. Some dairy products made by Bright were found to be contaminated with the industrial chemical.
It may be difficult for even the beloved White Rabbit to regain public confidence. Some consumers said they would be wary about eating it again, even if tests proved it was safe.
'I have stopped buying it. I don't dare eat it again,' said Shanghai student Teng Yudong.
