Shark's fin buffet menu in bad taste

Yet another hotel is forgoing political correctness for mass local appeal. The Marco Polo Hongkong Hotel's latest culinary push is a new shark's fin buffet. The Tsim Sha Tsui inn's Cafe Marco, throughout August and September, will serve numerous specialty dishes with the endangered animal's part.

Frankly, we're surprised they would court such a divisive subject when most people agree the fins are without taste and merely an out-of-date traditional Chinese symbol of wealth and prestige.

The hotel will cook shark fins in all manner of unusual methods, including as an appetiser in green papaya salsa, mixed with scrambled eggs and even in desserts like mango cheesecake, coconut panna cotta and chocolate tart.

We're not trying to get on a soapbox but it just seems like bad business sense to brag you're serving such an un-PC buffet when other places are refusing to serve the ingredient. Where are the Peta people when you really need them?

Incidentally, the buffet price even on weekend nights is just HK$378. Do you really think they will be top A-grade fins?
