DBS win title after thrilling contest

Diocesan Boys' School (DBS) got their revenge on arch rivals Ying Wa College (YWC) at the All Hong Kong Schools Jing Ying Basketball Tournament. The final took place at the ORS Memorial Sports Centre last Wednesday.

For basketball fans, it was no surprise that hot favourites YWC and DBS were the boys' finalists. And despite the fact it was a school holiday, the sports centre was packed with spectators before 9am. The two teams were welcomed by cheers and applause when they entered the court.

Three-time winners and defending champions YWC took the lead in the first quarter. The competition was fierce but DBS managed to draw level at half time, 19-19.

DBS returned for the second half a different team, playing much more aggressively. After a series of rapid attacks, they took a 35-30 lead at the end of the third quarter. YWC fought back impressively, but Yan Siu-chun scored several three-pointers in the crucial closing moments of the game to seal the victory for DBS. The final score was 58-47.

The brilliance of 18-year-old Yan not only clinched the game for DBS, but also won him the Most Valuable Player award.

'Finally, we were able to beat WYC. It's hard to explain my happiness in words. I think the whole team played very well. The victory should belong to all of us,' the Form Seven student said.

'I hope to pass my knowledge on to the younger players so they can maintain DBS' winning steak.'

The girls' MVP title went to Si Ping-ping of winning girls' team Heep Yunn School. Heep Yunn beat CCC Kwei Wah Shan College 38-30 in the final.

It was the first time Ping-ping had won the title, and she thanked her teammates for their support.

'I couldn't have won the title without them,' the 16-year-old said. 'I want to work harder so my school can win more titles.'
