Relax in style at luxurious 'playgrounds'

With the surge in luxury residential properties in recent years, the city has seen an accompanying increase in on-site clubhouses and lounges, which are ideal for relaxing, entertaining or holding meetings.

Increasingly, such facilities have become the norm for top-tier developments. The clubhouse at Bel-Air in Cyberport has 600,000 sqft of space and boasts an art gallery, wine cellars and a cigar room. Some clubhouses even have rooms for pets.

The clubhouse at Ocean Shores in Tseung Kwan O covers 350,000 sqft and has 10 swimming pools, while Caribbean Coast in Tung Chung has a clubhouse of 610,000 sqft and a rock climbing area, a lawn skiing field and a sanded beach volleyball court.

Other notable sites are Park Island in Ma Wan and Central Park Towers in Tin Shui Wai, with one million sqft and 210,000 sqft of clubhouse space respectively. Park Island's claims to fame are its zoo, banquet room and bowling alley, while Central Park has a go-kart circuit, Thai boxing ring and a skating room.

Other noteworthy properties with comprehensive clubhouse facilities and close to the commercial hub include 3 Repulse Bay, Dynasty Court, Pacific View, Four Seasons Place and The HarbourView Place.

Both Four Seasons Place and The HarbourView Place feature stylish sky lounges and a deluxe rooftop pool with jacuzzis, with the Four Seasons offering panoramic city and harbour views. Both offer the tallest sky lounges, gyms and rooftop heated pools in town.

'With round-the-clock operation and all-round guest services, we pride ourselves on our distinguishing quality from other properties. We provide our guests with a premium private lifestyle with a personalised human touch,' says Belinda Kuan, assistant general manager of Signature Homes, who adds that having the tallest clubhouses allow guests 'to indulge themselves with incomparable sea views whenever they enjoy their leisure time there, no matter whether working out in the gym, having a tan, a swim in the pool, or simply reading a newspaper and sipping coffee in the lounge'.

Alongside Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui is the four-storey, 140,000 sqft Pacific Club, which tenants of Gateway Apartments can use.

The members-only club boasts one of the largest ranges of full-scale facilities locally, says Rene Holenweger, assistant general manager of Gateway Apartments and general manager of the club.

Pacific Club's third floor houses three restaurants - Cantonese, fine dining and a family-friendly venue. There is a small bar on the first floor. The club also has a 25-metre indoor swimming pool with sun deck and five tennis courts, two of which are indoor with air conditioning. The club offers classes and activities including tai chi, kung fu, yoga, swimming, aerobics and tennis.

However, not to be outdone is Sino. While the clubhouse of its Palazzo drew rave reviews at its opening last summer for its elegant surroundings and plush comfort nestled alongside the Sha Tin racecourse, Sino has outdone itself with the facilities at its Pacific Palisades leased apartments at 1 Braemar Hill Road.

At the main entrance is the clubhouse with gym, restaurant and function rooms. An outdoor swimming pool and renovated spa are at the heart of the estate. 'The dance studio, children's playroom and library extend into the inner part of the estate. The three locations of the clubhouse are strategically placed with users in mind - for a nice view of the Kowloon peninsula,' says Victor Tin, deputy general manager (leasing) at Sino Group.

With upgrades under way at the development, it is one of the most comprehensive clubhouses in the eastern part of Mid-Levels. It has a spa, offering foot massages, facials, manicures and yoga classes, a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a modern gym, children's playground and full-service restaurants, and an all-weather dining room.

'Nowadays, it is quite special to have a full restaurant managed to a hotel's standards inside a clubhouse. The fact that Pacific Palisades' clubhouse owns one and one with a distinguish ambience is a rarity,' Tin says.

Worth noting is that all Sino developments have clubhouses. 'To us, a home is not just the architecture, but also all the peripherals such as clubhouses, amenities and value-added services that attend to the needs of the residents.'

Pacific Palisades has other creature comforts such as Chinese soup delivery and hairdressing services for residents with hectic lifestyles. It also has a piano-equipped music room for younger residents, while a 'Flight Experience' summer children's programme is in the works.

'The programme [gives] ground lessons and 'flight time' to our young residents to make it both entertaining and educational,' Tin says.

Residents have free access to most amenities at the clubhouse. 'Families with kids tend to use our facilities most, saying our classes match their needs in superb quality, and the conveniently located function rooms serve their purpose [for dance practising],' he says.

Housewives use the restaurant to socialise and also utilise the multifunction rooms for gatherings.

Businesspeople with busy lifestyles enjoy Pacific Palisades' fitness amenities for relaxation and exercise all year round. Apart from a dance studio, and art and cooking classes for adults, there is also a Japanese-speaking tennis tutor.

'For those who like to entertain within the estate, we have various multifunction rooms, billiard rooms and a restaurant,' Tin says.

Over at Four Seasons and HarbourView, Kuan says those properties try to optimise every aspect of the experience to make the guest's stay enjoyable.

'The elite facilities in our clubhouses are designed to satisfy the varied needs of all guests. From the gymnasium and [business] lounge for businesspeople ... to the children's playroom for kids and family entertainment, the clubhouse is full service [and offers] superb quality for multiple purposes, no matter if it's for a business meeting, exercise or relaxation. We've been receiving an enthusiastic response and positive feedback from our guests,' she says.

Organised activities at Signature Homes' properties include Chinese tea appreciation, wine tasting, whisky pairing, floral arrangement and also a class about making mousse cake to help guests relax and slow down from their hectic work schedules.

'We also offer yoga classes to help guests reduce stress and shape up, and a tai chi class that [shows] Chinese culture,' Kuan says.
