Lenna of Hobart
What is it? Nestled among converted warehouses, factories and wool stores, the stately Lenna of Hobart (below) stands out as a reminder of a majestic period in Tasmanian history. Classified by the Australian National Trust and listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register, the hotel's grand main building (built in 1874) was the home of wealthy shipbuilder Alexander McGregor. Having arrived from Scotland as a child, he went on to build the largest fleet of ships in the southern hemisphere.
Where is it? The Lenna sits on Hobart Harbour, at Battery Point, a short stroll from the cafes, restaurants, shops and galleries of Salamanca Place. An on-site car park, free for guests, will appeal to those hiring a four-wheeler. It's especially convenient on Saturdays, when the Salamanca Market is in full swing.
What's special about it? You don't have to leave the hotel to experience a slice of Hobart's history. Soaring windows, period furnishings and prints made from original glass-plate pictures of Hobart (taken between 1860 and 1938) create an old-world charm. Soak up the atmosphere with a cocktail in the Chandelier Lounge Bar beneath the blue and white flag of McGregor's fleet. It's also worth climbing the narrow, rickety staircase to the tower, which was once a lookout for McGregor's ships.
What are the rooms like? Both historic and contemporary. Rooms in the guest accommodation wing, which is linked to the main building, are furnished to complement the hotel's historic background. The spacious harbour view suites offer fantastic vantage points and come with king-sized beds, dining tables, desks, armchairs and sofas.
Those who like contemporary decor might prefer the studios and the one- and two-bedroom apartments across the road in the Salamanca Terraces building. Top of the range are two 1,800 sq ft two-bedroom penthouses (above) with floor-to-ceiling views of the harbour and the latest hi-tech gadgets, such as plasma televisions and touch-control lighting systems.
What about the food? Alexander's Restaurant, in the main building, has won awards for its old-world decor, extensive wine list and menu of modern Australian cuisine. Main courses are A$32 to A$38 (HK$230 to HK$280) and the menu has a respectable list of healthy low-salt and lactose- and gluten-free dishes.
What's the bottom line? Mountain or garden view rooms start at A$225 and harbour view suites at A$325. Don't forget to check the hotel's website for last-minute specials that can drop to A$109 during the low season. Penthouse apartments are A$895.
