Graphic Airlines duo hope that their latest multimedia exhibition will be first class

Art and design duo Tat and Vee of Graphic Airlines made a smooth landing at Daydream Nation's Star Street area shop, with the opening of their latest multimedia exhibition on Saturday. The pair, whose signature graphic 'fat face' can be seen on their commercial and street-art projects, were perched in the storefront of Kay and Jing Wong's fashion boutique, painting away with acrylic on large canvas.

'Echoing our graffiti collaborations, we wanted to do a painting in real time during this art show, so people could get a glimpse of our process,' Tat said. 'There is a level of pre-planning, especially for commercial projects, but once we start it gets very organic. We do come up against a difference of opinions sometimes, in which case we pause to hash it out.'

The two were of one mind on a particular series created for the occasion - a collection of guitars and plucked lutes 'tattooed' with their distinctive graphics in black and white, a homage to their singer-songwriter friend Jing.

'There's actually a portrait of Kay on one of them, too,' Vee said. 'I had a couple of small guitars lying around from when I dabbled in playing myself; we sourced the rest second-hand. The ones I'm more attached to are priced a little higher.'

The Wongs, as hosts, were on hand to keep the wine and conversation flowing, chatting about designs for the coming season, as well as Jing's upcoming live concert in March, which will be recorded for his first album for the People Mountain People Sea label. The exhibition runs until Sunday at Daydream Nation, G/F, 21 Wing Fung Street, Wan Chai.
