Travellers' checks

Lijiang luxury

The newly opened Pullman Lijiang Resort & Spa (above), in Yunnan province, is offering a launch deal that gives visitors booking two consecutive nights a third night for free until the end of June. Located just outside Lijiang, in the less commercial Shuhe old town, the Pullman has 51 rooms and 79 villas with private courtyards and views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Banyan Tree was the first upmarket developer in the area when it opened the Banyan Tree Lijiang, in 2006. It was joined by the Crowne Plaza Hotel Lijiang Ancient Town in 2009, and this third international property probably reflects growing domestic disposable income more than a significant rise in international arrivals, since getting to Lijiang requires some effort (it still has a high 'when I was in ...' rating with backpackers, who 'discovered' Lijiang in the 1980s). From Hong Kong the quickest way to get there is to get yourself to Shenzhen and take a domestic flight or to fly from Hong Kong to Kunming and get a connecting 30-minute flight to Lijiang. For reservations, call 800 938 768 or visit www.pullmanhotels.com.

Scenic drive

A stretch of coastal road has opened up north of Perth, in Western Australia, making some of the region's hitherto more inaccessible attractions mere diversions on the drive up to Geraldton, some 425 kilometres from Perth. Places such as The Pinnacles (left), Lesueur National Park, Thirsty Point and Hangover Bay are some picturesque stops awaiting the intrepid fly/drive tourist on the Indian Ocean Drive. For comprehensive information and directions, visit indian-ocean-drive.com. If you're heading that way this summer, Lonely Planet's Perth & West Coast Australia guide is out in July, but if you plan to travel before then you can download the 123-page Western Australia chapter of its Australia guide for US$4.95 at www.lonelyplanet.com.

Deal of the week

Westminster Travel is advertising a four-night package to Fiji with flights on Cathay Pacific from HK$7,110. Despite the fact that Cathay's code-share agreement with Air Pacific means you'll actually be flying with the Fiji-based airline, this is still a fairly cheap way to visit the South Pacific. The hotel at this price is the Novotel Nadi (www.novotel.com/6287), which looks a bit smarter than the average Novotel and gets good online reviews. Or you can stay at the Westin Resort & Spa or the Sheraton Fiji Resort (both www.starwoodhotels.com) for HK$10,020; Shangri-La's Fijian Resort & Spa, Yanuca Island (above; www.shangri-la.com) for HK$10,950; the InterContinental Golf Resort & Spa (www.ichotelsgroup.com) for HK$11,020; or Outrigger on the Lagoon (www.outrigger.com) for HK$11,280. Prices include daily breakfast, airport transfers and travel insurance. For details, call 2313 9800, quoting tour code CXNANGV2001, or visit www.westminstertravel.com.
