The Michinoku Coastal Trail, in the Tohoku region of northeastern Honshu, takes hikers on a journey through beautiful lands devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The inscription of 17 Neolithic sites in northern Japan on Unesco’s World Heritage list will, it is hoped, bring tourists back to the Tohoku region hit by a deadly and destructive earthquake and tsunami 10 years ago.

Tourists were rare on Japan’s Tadami railway line, but photos shown in Taiwan of its little trains chugging through misty valleys and enchanted forests brought a surge of interest.
