The scandal-plagued Toronto mayor Rob Ford was stripped of the last of his powers at a heated city council meeting. Defiant to the last, 44-year-old Ford argued with members of the public, railed at hecklers and knocked a female council member down as he lunged across the chamber.

Ford, who has admitted using crack cocaine, has vowed an "outright war" in next year's mayoral election.

 

The broadcaster saw ratings for its anniversary gala fall below 30 per cent for the first time in a decade amid an online campaign for a boycott and protests outside. It was the latest episode in a backlash against the government's decision not to grant a licence to HKTV.

 

The Secretary for Development didn't quite run the gauntlet, but did get an emotional reception when he toured the proposed site for a new town in the northeastern New Territories. Some of around 30 villagers burst into tears because they will have to leave their homes for the development.
