Trump faces even worse than midterm setback, if he keeps picking on US allies
- This president does not realise that his trade partners are the key to his “make America great again” ambition
I refer to the letter from Lo Wai Kong (“US midterm polls are litmus test for Trump”, November 6). In less than two years’ time, what we have witnessed from US President Donald Trump is not only outright appalling, but also bordering on completely immoral. For this reason, Mr Trump’s presidency will not escape condemnation, despite the midterm elections ending with mixed results for his party.
To start off, let’s look back at his “valiant” effort to promote protectionism and discrimination against other countries. Starting off with his promise to build a wall at the Mexican borders, Mr Trump is now turning against former US allies as well. His trade war with China may be somewhat understandable, given the constant tension between the two countries, but when he starts imposing tariffs on Canada and the European Union to force them to reverse the trade deficit to favour the US, it is obvious this president does not realise that his trade partners are the key to his “make America great again” ambition. Is it not illogical for someone who wants to make America better to antagonise his allies?
Most people have lost their faith in him and he will pay the price for sure in 2020.
