Hong Kong Perspectives photography exhibition shows glimpses of the city for good cause

Ten artists, including contemporary street photographers Christopher Lim and Natasza Minasiewicz, will show their work for one day only, with a portion of the proceeds going to homeless charity ImpactHK

Hong Kong’s diverse urban and rural landscapes make it a photographers’ paradise. A one-day exhibition of the work of Hong Kong-based photographers next week will offer a glimpse into its many sides.

“Hong Kong Perspectives” will be held on November 28 to coincide with the launch of photography website Bamboo Scenes. The exhibition will feature 80 works by 10 Bamboo Scenes photographers, all offering different views of the city.

The photographers include Elaine Li and Timmy Lo, fine-art photographers Frank Freeman and Stephanie Teng, and contemporary street photographers Christopher Lim and Natasza Minasiewicz.

Ten per cent of the profits from prints sold will go to the charity ImpactHK, which supports the homeless in Hong Kong – a cause made more urgent by recent government figures showing the number of poor hit a record high last year, with one in five people living below the poverty line. There is no set price for tickets to the event; instead organisers are asking for a donation. All donations will also go to charity.

Bamboo Scenes founder Madelon de Grave says she set up the platform after struggling to find unique yet affordable pieces of art for her home. “My friends had the same problem – that is why I started Bamboo Scenes.

“While the artists show the beauty of Hong Kong, they are not ignoring the harsh reality some face on the streets. That is why we are supporting ImpactHK.”

De Grave says after the one-day show, copies of the works will be displayed in restaurants, bars and cafes around the city, with the locations to be announced soon online. “We aim to make the art part of people’s daily life,” she says.
