What lies in store for each of the Chinese zodiac signs in terms of health, money, work and love in the Year of the Rabbit? A fortune-teller reveals all.

Explainer | Year of the Rabbit 2023: is it a lucky year for you? Zodiac sign predictions for health, money, work and love

  • A fortune-teller reveals which of the zodiac signs can look forward to a raise or promotion, a new relationship or a splurge on something big – like a car
  • She also reveals who should be looking out for their health, keeping their heads down at work and prone to manifesting messy love triangles in 2023

On January 22, the Chinese calendar will enter a new cycle as it shifts from one zodiac animal to another. It is the day to say goodbye to the fierce and ferocious tiger and wave hello to the cautious and peace-loving rabbit.

We asked fortune-teller, author and television host Tong Pik-ha what the Year of the Water Rabbit has in store for each animal sign in terms of health, money, work and love.

Rabbit (born 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011)

Lucky colour: white; lucky number: four; lucky stone: rose gold

This year, Rabbits directly offend the guardian deity of Tai Sui (fan Tai Sui), so they should be prepared for a few bumps ahead.

They can try boosting their luck with auspicious events such as getting married, starting a family, buying property or setting up a new business.

Luckily for Rabbits, there will be benefactors to help them with any challenges they may have.

There are two lucky stars for wealth for Rabbits this year, so they should take on a bit more risk when it comes to investing.

Work should be harmonious for white-collar workers – but remember, this is a year that offends the guardian deity so Rabbits should donate blood or go to the dentist during the second and eighth month of the lunar calendar to avoid any accidents that will end in bloodshed.

Dragon (1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012)

Lucky colour: green; lucky numbers: three, eight; lucky stone: jadeite

Dragons also offend the guardian deity this year, so it is best they keep their heads down and get on with tasks at hand. Fortunately, this is also a year of wealth for this zodiac sign, and small amounts of money can be used to make big gains.

This year, Dragons will be helped by male gui ren, or benefactors, so those working in typically male-dominated industries such as watchmaking, audiovisual equipment, cars and men’s fashion will thrive. There is a good chance for a raise or promotion.

As this is a fan Tai Sui year for Dragons, they will easily offend people.

Snake (1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013)

Lucky colour: blue; lucky number: one; lucky stone: sapphire

Snakes should have a fairly balanced year, as their zodiac neither offends or appeases the guardian deity. This is a good year for promotions at work, so Snakes should try to be more active.

Snakes will attract dynamic wealth this year, so they can be more proactive when it comes to business trips; even personal travel can boost their luck at work. Snakes should not fear any challenges that come their way, as there are many gui ren that will help them.

Their love life will be a bit more challenging, as they may feel their partner does not understand them and will be generally dissatisfied with them. More open communication will help avoid disagreements and conflicts.

Horse (1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014)

Lucky colour: black; lucky number: six; lucky stone: obsidian

Horses are at odds with the guardian deity this year, and that will affect their relationships. Special care should be taken when communicating with people.

This is the year for love, so single Horses will meet their match and they can be more proactive in starting a relationship. On the other hand, married and attached Horses should be careful when communicating with others, as messy love triangles will easily manifest.

Horses will have female gui ren at work this year so those in typically female-dominated industries such as beauty, cosmetics, jewellery and women’s fashion will have a good chance for career advancement.

Sheep (1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015)

Lucky colour: white; lucky number: nine; lucky stone: white crystal

Things will go well for Sheep in 2023, especially in partnerships and collaborations. It is also a year of prosperous wealth for them and they can look forward to taking greater risks in investing. Work is also great for Sheep as this is a year of progression, meaning there is a chance for a raise or promotion.

Any challenges will be helped by benefactors, but Sheep should be wary of gossip or any legal challenges this year. Pay attention to the fine print when signing contracts and do not be afraid to seek professional advice in these matters.

Monkey (1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016)

Lucky colour: green; lucky number: three; lucky stone: green phantom quartz

Monkeys have finally crawled out from the bad luck of fan Tai Sui last year. Things will improve this year, whether in love, at home or at work. They can look forward to a calmer, harmonious year ahead – 2023 will be good for learning new things and further education.

This is not a good year for money, where there are chances for financial loss. A good strategy is to make a hefty purchase to “compensate” a financial loss, such as buying luxury handbags or a car.

Rooster (1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017)

Lucky colour: yellow; lucky number: five; lucky stone: diamond

Roosters are in conflict with the guardian deity this year and, like Rabbits, should take part in fortunate events to wash the bad luck away. This is a year to further their education in a field that is related to work.

Unfortunately, there are no lucky stars to help Roosters so they will have to rely on themselves for a lot of things. There is a big financial loss in the stars in 2023, so Roosters should avoid any aggressive investments. It is also a bumpy year at work and it is very important that they stay positive.

Dog (1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018)

Lucky colour: green; lucky number: eight; lucky stone: green phantom quartz

Dogs are in harmony with Tai Sui this year, so it will be a good year for networking and relationships. This is also a good year for wealth, so they can try putting money in things they do not usually invest in. Both wealth and career have lucky stars for this zodiac sign, so there is a good chance for a raise and a promotion.

However, this is a bad year for travel, so when Dogs are abroad they should avoid dangerous activities such as skiing, water skiing or scuba diving – and they should remember to buy travel insurance.

Pig (1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019)

Lucky colour: red; lucky number: nine; lucky stone: amethyst

While 2023 is good for networking and relationships, it is a year of hard work for Pigs because of a lack of lucky stars. Just remember – no pain, no gain, so this year will require effort.

Pigs will also encounter difficult and powerful females this year and they should try to avoid confrontations. They will also attract a lot of gossip, so it is important to keep their heads down and stay out of other people’s business.

Pigs should be careful of accidents and bodily injury, so it is best to avoid dangerous activities such as riding roller coasters, bungee jumping, diving or water skiing this year.

Rat (1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020)

Lucky colours: red, purple; lucky numbers: two, seven; lucky stone: ruby

Rats are “destroyed” by Tai Sui this year, which usually manifests in a deterioration of relationships. Luckily, this is a year of romance for Rats, and single ones should take part in more social activities to meet new people or potential partners. Rats already in a relationship should be extra careful to avoid illicit affairs.

It is also a good year for careers for Rats – they should spare some time for work while they are socialising for a chance at a promotion or a raise.

Ox (1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021)

Lucky colour: white; lucky numbers: four, nine; lucky stone: gold

Oxen neither offend nor appease Tai Sui this year. This is a year of wealth for this zodiac sign, so they should work hard to maximise financial gains. Unfortunately, Oxen will not have any lucky stars, so will have to rely on themselves.

Health will be an issue, so it would be a good idea for this zodiac sign to go for a body check before the Year of the Tiger is out. It is also a good time for Oxen to buy new furniture or start some light refurbishment at home to promote better family fortune.

Tiger (1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022)

Lucky colours: gold, silver; lucky number: nine; lucky stone: silver

Tigers are finally over the bad luck of fan Tai Sui last year and they will be entering the new zodiac cycle with a bang. There will be plenty of gui ren, meaning they have a lot of helpful people helping them achieve their goals.

Tigers will have a lucky star in wealth so they could consider a more aggressive strategy when investing. It will also be a foolhardy year for Tigers, meaning it will be easy to lose and misplace things.

If Tigers are travelling, it would be a good idea to buy travel insurance, as they are a little prone to sickness this year and should take their vitamins, exercise and get a medical check-up.
